The main walk through Luray Caverns takes about one hour.
The paved, step-free pathway covers 1.25 miles. You will walk past large underground chambers with ceilings up to 10 stories high. The underground route stays at a constant 54°F (12°C).
Along the route, you will see formations like Dream Lake and Titania's Veil. Cave formations grow roughly one cubic inch every 120 years.
How much time for the included museums?
Expect to spend one to two hours exploring the three included above-ground attractions.
General admission includes entry to the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Shenandoah Heritage Village, and Toy Town Junction. The car museum displays over 140 vintage vehicles. The heritage village features restored 19th-century buildings.

| Toy Town Junction | 20 minutes |

How long do optional paid attractions take?
Add another hour or two if you plan to do the extra on-site activities.
These activities sit just outside the caverns and require separate tickets. The Garden Maze takes about 30 minutes for a family to solve. The Rope Adventure Park requires 45 to 60 minutes.
Stoneyman Gemstone Mining takes roughly 20 minutes. It is a hands-on sluice where children can pan for real gems and fossils.
Can I visit on a day trip from Washington, D.C.?
Yes, you can easily visit Luray Caverns on a day trip from the capital.
The drive takes about 90 minutes via US Highway 211. Ample free parking is available near the entrance for cars and RVs. If you do not want to drive, guided tours offer transportation from Washington, D.C.

How long does it take to see the Great Stalacpipe Organ?
You will spend about 10 minutes at the Great Stalacpipe Organ during your cave walk.
This instrument taps stalactites across 3.5 acres to create symphonic music. Visitors cannot play the console to protect the site. Instead, an automated mechanism plays the music during tours.
What is the best time of year to go?
You can visit any day of the year, but October is highly recommended.
